What’s stopping you trying?
I have run kettlebell classes in North Tyneside for 5 years now and the most common reasons I hear from people for not have come along to a class are:
I don’t even know what a kettlebell is!
Well it’s a bit like a cannon ball with a handle. The ‘cannon ball’ bit is the bell. The bit added on is the horns (the sides coming up from the bell) and the top in the handle (the bit that joins the horns)
I’d never be able to lift it
Kettlebells come in all different sizes from 4kg right up 20kg plus. In class you can start with a lower weight and work up as your confidence grows. You will be surprised at what you can do, after all most people carry shopping bags or small children that are heavier!
I don’t want to bulk up
It takes a lot of dedicated weight training to bulk up so while using kettlebells in class format can make you stronger, it isn’t going to turn you into Arnie.
So what do we do in a kettlebell class?
There are lots of different exercises you can do. Fundamentally you lift; swing; push; pull; squat; lunge and twist. My kettlebell classes here in North Tyneside are a combination of low impact, functional exercises. There is no running or jumping involved!
This short video shows just a few of the basic moves.
What are the benefits?
There are loads! The reasons I choose to use kettlebells though is that:
- the exercises can assist with everyday movement patterns, lifting, reaching, getting up and down and turning.
- like any weight bearing exercise, it is good for our bones, helping improve bone density and therefore reducing the risk of osteoporosis.
- you get a full body workout with one piece of kit
